BLUE ORIGIN - CLUB FOR THE FUTURE

VISUAL RESUME

ABOUT ME:

Stanley Von Medvey is a writer and illustrator of hard science fiction, as well as a director in animation. He served as the Visual Development Supervisor and resident futurist on the hard sci-fi animated series Pantheon (AMC), and has directed and boarded on shows like The Venture Brothers, The Legend of Vox Machina, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures, and feature films like Sonic 2 and 3. He writes short stories on a Substack called Orbital Search and Rescue, highly realistic tales of life, love and catastrophic incompetence on the high frontier.

Stan is a lifelong aeronautics and space science enthusiast, creating animated STEM teaching materials on YouTube and Gumroad. He directed an animatic for SpaceX and is an active member of the National Space Society. In 2003, he designed and built small autonomous payloads that flew aboard Shuttle Atlantis and Endeavour via the (sadly now defunct) NASA Student Involvement Program. For several years Stan provided technical and visionary illustrations for the Space Development Steering Committee, blending science, policy, engineering and economics in realistic depictions of cis-lunar economic growth.

Stanley has lived and worked in Berkeley, Los Angeles and Chicago, attending conferences, ISDC, screening short films and hosting panels at San Diego Comic-Con, C2E2, networking at JPL events, participating in star parties and grade school community STEM events.

He is also a father of two amazing little boys.

STAN DRAWS SPACESHIPS & READY TO FLY

SPACEFLIGHT ENGINEERING YOUTUBE EDUCATION

“Stan Draws Spaceships” was an attempt to explain difficult spaceflight engineering concepts in a friendly and appealing way using traditional 2D animation. The idea was that the visceral, felt simplicity of animation would make it easier for the viewer to develop an intuition for these ideas free of preconceptions. I created a character named “Morgan” that embodies much of what I found inspiring about my high school physics and astronomy teacher Lynne Zielinski, and as a homage to the countless other bold women in STEM actively creating the future.

I developed a television show pitch that would later become a seed for the next project, “Ready to Fly”

Stan Draws Spaceships Pitch Deck

“Ready to Fly” is a proof of concept pitch I developed for a young adult television program. The premise was that a “Marry Poppins of Space” type character would guide young people through the magic of spaceflight, powered by their shared imaginations.

ORBITAL SEARCH AND RESCUE

WRITING AND WORLD BUILDING PROJECT

I maintain a blog of short science fiction here:

OSR Substack

This has become a sprawling exploration of the technical and emotional possibilities of being a first responder in cis-lunar space. Much of the story follows “Sky” - a first responder and mother of two. The trials and tribulations of parenting, and the unique challenges that result from collisions between career and motherhood are frequently explored.
